BOAT & FUN BERLIN is sponsoring the legendary Sessan Cup 2014
Berlin, 9. April 2014 – BOAT & FUN BERLIN, due to take place from 26 – 30 November 2014, will be sponsoring this year’s Sessan Cup. From 25 – 27 April, 26 teams from seven countries will be competing on Berlin’s Wannsee lake. As many as 156 yachtsmen will be taking part on 52 Folkboats. The two countries with the largest number of participants are Sweden with five and Denmark with four teams. The Danish teams will include Søren Kæstel, winner of the Gold Cup 2013 (the inofficial world championships of Folkboat sailing), as well as current Sessan Cup holders and defendants Per Jörgensen and Christian Thomsen from Kolding.
As Daniel Barkowski, Project manager of BOAT & FUN Berlin points out: “We are proud to be supporting and sponsoring the prestigious Sessan Cup. The large number of foreign participants shows how attractive the sailing waters in and around Berlin really are. This popularity is reflected in the sailing section of BOAT & FUN BERLIN, which we have greatly expanded over the past few years.”
The event’s host, the “Seglervereinigung 1903 Berlin e.V. (SV03)” club, will be providing the boats – assisted by the regional Folkboat fleets. In a draw, the helmsmen, who will be bringing along only with their own sails and one crew member, will be allocated a boat. The local boat owner will then complete the crew. The participants form teams comprising two boats each to represent their nation or fleet and will compete in a classical fleet-race of four regattas spread over two days.
“The Sessan Cup is something really special – not just for us”, Gunter May, a member of SV 03, told us. Together with Heinz Wohlrab, he is one of the two contact men to the Folkboat class. “First and foremost it’s a big family meeting, which would not be possible here without the support and hospitality of Berlin yacht owners. And the family is still growing – even more than 70 years after the Folkboat was introduced. In 2014, we will have participants from Estonia, Great Britain and Hungary for the very first time.“
The Sessan Cup is the oldest international Folkboat regatta and, along with the Gold Cup and the San Francisco Cup, is one of the major international contests in the Folkboat class. The event goes back to 1952, when it was staged in Göteborg for the very first time. Since 1957, the regatta has been named after the Sessan boatyard, which used to run a ferry across the Kattegat, linking Göteborg in Sweden to Frederikshavn in Denmark, and whose owner Ulf Trapp was a Folkboat enthusiast. Nowadays, the event venue alternates between Scandinavia and Germany. The last time the Sessan Cup event was held at Berlin Wannsee was in 2008.
The Seglervereinigung 1903 Berlin e.V. has some 400 members and is located on the Klare Lanke bay of the Lower Havel River, right next to Schwanenwerder island. The club can look back on a long history of more than 110 years, during which it has produced a number of successful yachtsmen and has staged many German and international championships. Over the past few years, the club has been particularly successful in the Optimist, Folkboat and the new Yardstick sports boat classes. At its harbour and club-house, located at Wannseebadweg, SV 03 is providing the entire infrastructure and an experienced regatta management team for staging the Sessan Cup event with more than 150 participants.
