Launch of BOAT & FUN BERLIN initiative supporting young people

’DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE WATER’ initiative attracts children and young people from Berlin and Brandenburg to water sports

Berlin, 3 July 2014 – Sailing, water skiing, wakeboarding, surfing, kite surfing, canoeing, kayaking, riding motorboats, sailing rubber dinghies, rowing, stand up paddling, lifesaving courses, diving, fishing dragon boat paddling: these are the many, water sports activities offered by the BOAT & FUN BERLIN initiative entitled ’DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE WATER’.

Since the season of water sports began this spring and up until it ends in October over twenty water sports clubs from Berlin and Brandenburg are inviting schoolchildren of every age to participate free of charge. In the ten years since its launch the initiative supporting young people has succeeded in getting hundreds of children and young people onto the water and into water sports clubs. The idea of ’DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE WATER’ is not to briefly attract children and young people’s attention but to inspire an enduring fascination with water sports.

Under the supervision of professional youth coaches the children go onto the water together in order to test their skills and to get to know young people of the same age. Training session equipment and coaching is free of charge.

’DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE WATER’ is sponsored by the following water sports associations: Berliner Seglerverband e.V., Verband Brandenburgischer Segler e.V., Landestauchsportverband Brandenburg e.V., Landesruderverband Brandenburg e.V., Landesruderverband Berlin e.V., Deutscher Wasserski- und Wakeboard-Verband e.V., Landes-Kanu-Verband Berlin e.V.and Deutscher Lebens- Rettungsgesellschaft (DLRG) Landesverband Berlin. Launched by the Berlin boating exhibition, this initiative is organised in cooperation with the Berlin Senate Department of Education, Youth and Science and is under the patronage of Dr. Martina Münch, the Minister of Education, Youth and Sports of the federal State of Brandenburg.

Those who excel at their activities with ’DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE WATER’ will be able to show off their skills at BOAT & FUN BERLIN, which takes place on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds (ExpoCenter City) from 26 to 30 November 2014.

Furthermore, on 28 November 2014 children and teachers keen on water sports will be able to take part in the Schools Day and be granted free admission to BOAT & FUN BERLIN.
